I am so glad to finally read something with some concrete advice, although I am a lazy sod, who will probably not follow any of it. If, however, you have the energy, willpower, and willingness to have the back of your car forever filled with straw, here's what you can do to try to save your plants.
"Brian Minor of Minor's Garden Center on Milwaukee's northwest side said that if the mercury plunges quickly, this year's plant growth could die.
But if snow falls and leaves a blanket of insulation, or the temperature falls slowly, the plants should be fine, he said.
He recommends covering them with straw but not until a day or so before the temperature is predicted to drop sharply.
Steve Kolowith, owner of Bayside, suggested covering bulb plants right away - perhaps with a cut-up Christmas tree."
